Random updates in bulletpoint format!

  • moved into a new place a little over a month ago - not the greatest part of town, but the apartment itself is nice (anyone interested in visiting sunny Las Vegas during the winter?)
  • dated two different women since the last update - the first date for one of them I thought went phenomenally well (6+ hours, lot of fun, we made plans for a second date) and then she became really flaky on me (I'm probably getting the polite brushoff, but I'm confused as usual), the other one we dated for a few weeks with everything going reasonably well and then she had a family emergency and decided that she needed to focus on getting her life squared away (including changing careers, trying to find a new place/maybe moving out of state, etc) and not be involved in any romantic relationships right now yet she's still calling me wanting to talk and hang out as friends
  • working on my poker game quite a bit, branching out into omaha as well as hold em - consistently making money, deciding whether to step up my level
  • I got business cards, so I'm officially a person at my company! (instead of having to write in/cross out info on a mostly blank card, which was embarassing...never passed those out)
  • work is...work (too much drama)
  • I now have a cellphone (paid for by work, yay for free stuff even if being connected all the time isn't always a good thing)
  • anyone know of a need for freelance editing/writing (I do a wide variety of stuff, including technical writing)?
  • possible new favorite cheese: pyrenees mountain cheese (like a creamier version of manchego, one of my old favorite cheeses)
  • I desperately miss real apple cider (I still hold a grudge towards the cheesecake factory for serving me apple juice and calling it apple cider), sigh, Burnham's...
  • recovered from a cold recently, zinc really does make a difference
  • catching up on reading, I can strongly recommend Bait and Switch, Annie Duke's biography (and this is coming from someone who generally hates biographies)

It's over with Lexi, as of last Saturday. We both agreed that it needed to happen, so we broke up on good terms and are still talking. The whole friends after a breakup thing is completely foreign to me, I joked with her that unless someone is suicidal, it's not a proper breakup. Unresolved issues were largely a function of conflicting personalities, there were a few other ones that are largely irrelevant now. In a bit of irony, my mom may be getting a job at the same library Lexi works at.

Got a decent raise, steadily moving up the corporate ladder. I'm not sure exactly how I feel about this. I'm thinking about writing more seriously...any tips?

The new (unreleased) Fiona Apple CD is quite good, if I had to pick my favorite singer's voice, it would be hers. It joins my top 3 CDs of the year (Fall Out Boy and Jack Johnson at 1 and 2).

Well, Lexi and I have been dating for almost a year.  She's originally from Ohio as well, Toledo area, which I didn't know ahead of time.  Graduated with a degree in psychology, works as a children's librarian right now.  Things are rather rocky right now.  We're ok when we're doing something, but when we're not our personalities and styles are too conflicting.  A couple huge issues cropped up too that are lying around unresolved.  I think my next relationship needs to be a quick rebound fling instead my usual long-term one.

California was good. It was peaceful and restful (and reasonably beautiful, even though it wasn't really what I was expecting...it was awfully...pastoral?). Traveling down Route 1 on the coast was amazing. I saw the Pacific for the first time, and it's easy to see how people thought that you'd go off the edge, there's nothing for as far as you can see. Walked the beaches quite a bit, explored the small coastal towns, and just hung out with Lexi. I also think that I would go nuts living there, as there wasn't much to do. There were liquor stores *everywhere*. Running a close second was antique stores. Nothing else was even in the vicinity for popularity, there were seriously more antique stores in the town we were in (5) than restaurants (4). And considering I'm used to the conveniences of Las Vegas... I was a little surprised that there wasn't more cheese available, as California is supposed to be famous for its cheese (producing more than Wisconsin even, dontcha know...and Wisconsin produces more cranberries than California, despite California being the official cranberry state). So overall, good experience. Any recommendations for my next trip?

I'm excited that this weekend will be my first trip to California and chance to see the Pacific.  If there's anything close to Morro Bay (or reasonably between Las Vegas and there) that's a must see, let me know!
